Ryan Gosling tells PEOPLE he has “no idea” whether he and Rachel McAdams are still a couple.

On Tuesday, Gosling attended a New York screening of his new film Fracture with his mother and sister – but not McAdams. Asked at the Cinema Society event whether he and McAdams were still dating, Gosling said: “No idea. No comment.”

McAdams, 30, Gosling, 26, who met on the set of 2004’s The Notebook, have been on shaky ground for months, a source tells PEOPLE.

“Ryan is really controlling,” says a source close to the couple. “He has been directing her life – including her career choices – and that can get old.”

However, at a junket for Fracture earlier this month Gosling said that McAdams, “doesn’t need any help from me. She’s inspired me to do so much.”

McAdams was also absent from the Los Angeles Fracture premiere with Gosling on April 11. Similarly, in February McAdams did not accompany Gosling to the Film Independent Spirit Awards or to the Academy Awards, when he was nominated for his role in Half Nelson.

“She’s working,” Gosling said at the LA Fracture premiere. “We go back and forth. That’s just the way it is right now.”

In the April issue of Elle McAdams complimented Gosling’s work ethic and acting style, saying: “He’s very brave. I don’t think he sees the point unless he can find out what he’s made of every time.”

Gosling’s rep declined to comment; McAdams’s rep didn’t respond to a request for comment.
