July’s issue of Rosie, the still relatively new publication from Rosie O’Donnell, will feature a controversial covergirl: Rosie herself. Despite pleas from her colleagues at the monthly magazine (which debuted in May), O’Donnell, 40, decided to bump the planned celebrity cover subject, Megan Mullally of Will & Grace. Instead, she will run a shot of the post-op Rosie after she emerged from the hospital in May after being treated for a staphylococcus aureus infection in her hand, reports The New York Times. (She had hurt her hand last fall while removing a price tag from her son Parker’s fishing pole.) What’s startling about the decision — and the unretouched photo itself — is that the picture was taken at Rosie’s home while she was wearing a hospital gown and not wearing makeup. It is not a glamour shot by any means. Heated editorial discussions ensued, says The Times. But in the end, Rosie put her foot down and demanded that the photo run. Her reasoning was that readers would relate to the reality of her situation. “After all, I’ve just gotten out of the hospital and almost died,” Rosie told The Times. “Who has time for lipstick?”
