In a rare red-carpet appearance, Good Morning America anchor Robin Roberts and longtime girlfriend Amber Laign stepped out together to support students who work to make schools safer for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students.
“Honored to be with courageous students,” Roberts Tweeted Monday night after appearing at the GLSEN Respect Awards in New York City. The 53-year-old anchor also shared a picture on Twitter of herself and Laign, 39, posing with students.
“I’m delighted to support GLSEN, an incredible organization that is working to end bullying and make schools safer for LGBT students,” Roberts said in a statement recognizing the work of the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network. “I’m particularly happy to lift up the leadership of students who fight for respect and dignity for all,” she said.
The beloved anchor, whose memoir Everybody’s Got Something is a best seller, presented the GSA of the Year Award to the Gay-Straight Alliance club from Park City High School in Park City, Utah.
Roberts first shared her relationship with Laign, a licensed massage therapist, who has stood by her through breast cancer and her fight against a blood and bone marrow disease called myelodysplastic syndrome, in a Facebook post last December.
In an interview with PEOPLE in April, Roberts said, “I just love the fact that people now know that this very special person was there [helping me] as I was recognizing others that were there,” she said. “I love her that much to let people know that.”
