Rob Pattinson: Oh, Baby, What a Cutie!
As a tow-headed toddler, Pattinson – who was born in London on May 13, 1986 – explored a local playground. Years later the only son of Richard, a retired luxury car importer, and Clare, who worked for a modeling agency, would get his first exposure to stardom in his breakout role as dashing wizard Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
Pattinson has said that as a child, his big sisters Elizabeth and Victoria would dress him up as a girl and call him Claudia. The experience seemed to help his modeling career. "When I first started I was quite tall and looked like a girl, so I got lots of jobs, because it was during that period where the androgynous look was cool," says Pattinson. "Then, I guess, I became too much of a guy, so I never got any more jobs. I had the most unsuccessful modeling career."
WHY SO SERIOUS?
Pattinson strikes a solemn pose in a class photo from London's Tower House School. He later became involved in theater through the Barnes Theater Company, landing the attention of an agent in a production of Tess of the D'Ubervilles.
Complete with a hat, rifle and duffel bag, the young Englishman played soldier as a boy. He would later play a military man in the 2006 British TV movie The Haunted Airman, about a disabled pilot recovering from his experiences in World War II.
Pattinson (at age 2) strolled with mom Clare and sister Victoria in London. He later told Vanity Fair that his mother, while not a "stage mom," will comment on photos she sees of her son in the press. "'I like that new shirt you're wearing!' 'Uh, thanks.'"
AN OFFICER & AND GENTLEMAN
Pattinson enjoyed a sandwich and some dress-up with a local policeman, covering up his signature do with the bobby's hat. Pattinson has since joked of his now-famous tresses, "The hair is 75 percent of my performance."
MAD FOR PLAID
The future Edward rocked suspenders and plaid shorts (at age 2) in this family snapshot. Some things don't change: He's still got a preference for plaid, sporting a checkered shirt while promoting New Moon in L.A.
