After receiving an outpouring of support from friends and fans in the wake of her breast cancer announcement, Rita Wilson took to Twitter on Monday to thank her thousands of well-wishers.

“I am overwhelmed with gratitude by your prayers and good wishes and the kindness you’re sending. Thank you. Thank you.” the actress, 58, posted.

In an exclusive statement to PEOPLE on Tuesday, Wilson revealed she was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and had undergone a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery.

The actress wrote that she feels “blessed” to have the love and support of her husband, Tom Hanks, friends, family and the doctors who saved her life.

She is currently on leave from her Broadway play, Fish in the Dark, but is set to return to the stage May 5.

Wilson attributes her recovery to getting a second opinion from both her doctor and pathologist and is encouraging other women to do the same.

“I share this to educate others that a second opinion is critical to your health,” she said. “You have nothing to lose if both opinions match up for the good, and everything to gain if something that was missed is found, which does happen. Early diagnosis is key.”
