On Tuesday morning, Rita Wilson shared some very personal news – the actress, 58, was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and has just undergone a double mastectomy, as well as reconstructive surgery.

In a statement to PEOPLE, Wilson expressed how “blessed” she feels to have her husband, Tom Hanks, friends and family rooting for her.

“Last week, with my husband by my side, and with the love and support of family and friends, I underwent a bilateral mastectomy and reconstruction for breast cancer after a diagnosis of invasive lobular carcinoma. I am recovering and most importantly, expected to make a full recovery. Why? Because I caught this early, have excellent doctors and because I got a second opinion,” she said.

The outpouring of support from fellow celebrities, as well as fans inspired and empowered by Wilson’s admission, has been incredible, which has no doubt helped the star achieve her goal: to “encourage others to get a second opinion and to trust their instincts if something doesn’t ‘feel’ right.” //storify.com/peoplemag/celebs-rally-around.js?header=none&border=false
