It’s his signature tune – and Rick Springfield says “Jessie’s Girl” often comes on when he least expects it.

“I’ll sometimes hear it at the supermarket!” Springfield tells PEOPLE. “Or if I go to gyms on the road, they’ll play it.”

But the musician-actor, who’s currently starring Meryl Streep’s boyfriend in Ricki and the Flash, in theaters now, says he most enjoys hearing the song covered by other musicians.

“I’ll walk by a bar and hear a band playing it live. That’s the coolest thing,” he says, although admits he has yet to join in. “They do it better than I do!”

While the singer says he still likes playing his classic hits, he also looks forward to putting out new music to play for audiences and will soon be releasing his 18th studio album.

“I think it’s great that I’m still excited about music. I can’t just always do another old song. I have to play new music and I have to play it live.”
