Rainn Wilson: Emmy Nod Is Best Thing Since Sting
The Office nominee hasn't won anything since a 1985 poster of the musician
Rainn Wilson’s Emmy nomination has him waxing nostalgic – among other things.
“I’m ecstatic. I haven’t won anything since I won a giant poster of Sting from the Dream of the Blue Turtles Tour in 1985,” The Office star, who is up for outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series, tells PEOPLE. “I’m not saying I’m winning, but I’m not someone who’s nominated. I think we should open an Emmy nomination club in L.A.
Adds Wilson, 41, who plays Dwight K. Schrute on the hit show: “It’s pretty nice. I wonder if I get anything with that nomination like a plaque.”
Though the nominations were announced at dawn L.A. time, the news didn’t take long to reach Wilson. “I’m in Toronto filming a movie,” says Wilson (who, according to reports, is making The Rocker), “and we’ve been on night shoots. And I got a call from my producer on the movie, who was frantically trying to be the first one to call me. I think he beat my publicist by like eight seconds.”
So, what was his reaction? “I managed to go back to sleep for about four hours,” says Wilson. “I’m going to be filming on about five hours of sleep – so don’t watch those parts of the movie.”
Wilson’s costar, Jenna Fischer, was also recognized for her role on the NBC series with a nomination for outstanding supporting actress in a comedy. “I’m totally thrilled for Jenna,” he says. “One of the first calls I made, I made to her, and I haven’t heard back from that bitch. But yeah, I’m so excited for her.”
Through her rep, Fischer issued a statement about her own nod, saying: “This is huge to me. I am beyond excited. I don’t know where to begin. Well, for one, it gives me a good excuse to try high heels again.” (In May, Fischer injured her back falling down a flight of stairs while wearing heels.)
