Producer Rodney Jerkins Weds Singer
There was some instant replay at Sunday’s wedding of Latina singer Joy Enriquez and Grammy-winner Rodney Jerkins, who’s produced for Britney Spears, Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston.
As the brand new bride stumbled on her train after being pronounced married by Rev. Jim Reeve, she quickly stopped the procession, righted herself and pronounced to the 200 guests at the Ritz-Carlton in Laguna Niguel, Calif.: “I got to do it again.”
And so she did, sprinting back to the minister’s side in her Vera Wang pumps to restart her walk down the aisle with her new husband. The crowd cheered. So did Jenkins.
“It was wonderful,” one of the guests (and Jerkins’s boyhood friend), former heavyweight boxing champ Mike Tyson, tells PEOPLE. “I liked the music the best, and I was glad to be a part of this.”
Jerkins, 26, and Enriquez, 25, sang their vows to each other accompanied by the 14-piece Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, and gospel singers Bebe Winans and Yolanda Adams also performed. Guests at the musical wedding included Tyson and Chris Tucker. Michael Jackson was expected, but he and sister Janet were recording a duet at an undisclosed location in Los Angeles, according to Jerkins.
Jerkins and Enriquez first met when she was 19, and he produced her self-titled first album. Recalled the new bride: “Rodney said, ‘I am going to marry you one day. Get the ring.’ When I finished the album, I added in the thank-you notes: ‘To Rodney Jerkins, when is the wedding?'”
But then a few years went by, and the two didn’t so much as cross paths — until Michael Jackson invited them to his 45th birthday party at Neverland last September. “I saw Rodney with his posse, Nick Carter, Mike Tyson and LaShawn Daniels,” said Enriquez. “I went over to LaShawn and asked if Rodney was married or had a girlfriend.”
Not yet — though the proposal didn’t come until the wee hours of the morning on Nov. 22, after the two had seen the L.A. production of “The Producers.” They had gone to watch the sun rise in Malibu.
“He got down on one knee and told me that he loved me,” said Enriquez. “He loved me more than his Grammys. He loved me more than every one of his hit records and asked if I would I marry him. And I said I would. We are a big time couple, and God had so much to do with this.”
