While Tuesday’s announcement about Prince William and Kate Middleton finally made it official, engagement speculation has been circulating since the summer – reaching a fever pitch when the couple were seen at a friend’s wedding last month.

A week later, her parents joined the prince, who turned 28 on June 21, and at a weekend shooting party at the royal family’s Scottish estate of Balmoral.

The shared holiday was viewed as a sure sign that an engagement would be imminent for William and Kate, both 28.

The couple met as students at the University of St. Andrews shortly after they arrived there to study Art History in 2001.

Within a year they were dating and, within two years were living together with other students in an apartment, and then, in a farmhouse on the edge of the fabled golf destination in northeast Scotland.

Middleton has been such a fixture that in 2006 she was there with the rest of William’s family to attend his graduation from military academy.

The occasion marked the first time she was a guest of her boyfriend at an official royal engagement with the Queen present.

But their relationship has not been without its ups and downs and they split in April 2007 but were back together by October.
