"Let's take it easy on women and their appearances – pregnant or not," Global BC's Kristi Gordon tells PEOPLE

Kristi Gordon has been proudly displaying her growing baby bump while delivering the weather forecast for British Columbia’s news channel Global BC – but several viewers have written her letters body-shaming her for doing so.

Gordon read some of the hate mail she had received while on the air during News Hour Plus.

“Nowhere on North America TV have we seen a weather reader so gross as you,” read one piece of mail. “Your front end looks like the Hindenburg and your rear end looks like a brick house. We now turn off Global.”

Another viewer wrote, “Buy some decent clothes and have more respect for your unborn child.”

Gordon admitted that even though she’s a confident person, those type of messages still affect her.

“Last night [ ] I checked myself out in the mirror a couple of times just to see how big I’m getting. I asked my husband, ‘Am I not seeing it? Am I getting really big?'” she said during the segment. “Despite thinking that these guys are crazy, and me having all these rational thoughts about it, [ ] when you say something mean about someone it still affects them. Even if you’re joking about something, it sinks in at some level.”

Since addressing her haters on the air, Gordon has received an outpouring of support from people “saying how outraged they are at some of the feedback I’ve received,” she wrote in a blog post. “For those of you emailing to say I look great and to keep my head up – THANK YOU!”

Gordon never expected she would get so much positive feedback.

“I have been overwhelmed by hundreds of emails,” she tells PEOPLE. “I had no idea this topic would attract so much attention but I’m sure glad it did. Let’s take it easy on women and their appearances – pregnant or not.”
