Pizza’s on Pope Francis!

Every day for the past two weeks, the popular pontiff has been treating Rome’s homeless to a summer escape that includes a trip to the beach and a pizza dinner.

Bishiop Konrad Krajewski, who is in charge of distributing the Vatican’s charity money, told the Vatican Insider that he has been driving groups of 10 homeless people per day to a beach outside the Italian capital. The guests, who are given new swimsuits and towels for the excursion, spend the afternoon sunbathing and swimming.

On the way home, they stop at a pizzeria for dinner, “as do many people who are on vacation at this time,” Krajewski said.

“We are certainly not saving the world with these initiatives, we are not solving the problems of the homeless in Rome, but at least we are giving them back a little dignity,” Krajewski said.

The cost of the pizza party is covered by Francis, who himself has been known to enjoy the occasional slice – or more. He said last year that he missed being able to “go out, without anyone recognizing me, and go to a pizzeria to eat pizza.”
