Taye Diggs on Starring in Hedwig and the Angry Inch: 'I Like Wearing Nail Polish'
The Broadway vet looks forward to being "humbled" by the role
Taye Diggs is about to make a stylish return to the Great White Way.
The actor and Broadway alum will take over the titular role in the smash revival of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, and PEOPLE has an exclusive first look at Diggs glammed up in glittery makeup as the character.
“Hedwig is the role of a lifetime. I’m looking forward to being challenged performance-wise on many levels, as well as being humbled by the musical’s social implications,” Diggs says in the new issue of PEOPLE, adding: “I also like wearing nail polish.”

The actor will start his 12-week run as Hedwig – a transgender rocker who sings about her botched surgery – in N.Y.C. on July 22, replacing Glee star Darren Criss. And Diggs is actually the sixth actor to take on the role since its Broadway return last year. Neil Patrick Harris scored a Tony as the revival’s original star, while Andrew Rannells, Michael C. Hall, John Cameron Mitchell (the musical’s co-writer) and Criss all donned high heels and fishnets as well.
His turn in Hedwig marks Diggs’ first time on a Broadway stage in over a decade: He last appeared in Wicked in 2004.
