Not even a blizzard could stop this Pennsylvania couple from getting married on Saturday!

Kevin and Carmen Shanahan, of Fallston, Pennsylvania, were heartbroken when they learned that a massive snowstorm would be sweeping the nation on the weekend of their wedding – but the newlyweds quickly decided not to let the weather take away from their joyous day.

“We were getting married, blizzard or not!” Carmen, a 31-year-old EMT, tells PEOPLE with a laugh. “We were like, ‘It’s game time!’ ”

The couple met four years ago through mutual friends, and had been planning their dream wedding since they got engaged last year.

The couple’s event photographer, Jeffrey Sabotta, of Sabotta Imagery, says the pictures he took “completely captured” the essence of the wedding.

“We were laughing and having a good time taking those pictures,” Sabotta, 37, tells PEOPLE. “People were out there in their coats cheering us on!”

The photographer adds, “I told them, ‘If you’re willing to do this, I promise the pictures will turn out amazing!’ So they strapped on their snow boots and came outside with me.”

Carmen says most of the invited guests were unable to attend, but that all immediate family members were there.

“It ended up being a perfect day for an imperfect predicament,” she says with a laugh. “Kevin and I keep telling ourselves, ‘We got married in a blizzard!’ It still blows our minds.”

Kevin, a 29-year-old Pennsylvania police officer, says he never imagined his wedding would take place during a snowstorm, but that everything worked out “perfectly.”

“It turned out so amazing,” Kevin tells PEOPLE. “I can’t believe we actually pulled our wedding off!”

The excited groom adds, “We obviously hadn’t planned any of it to be that way, but I couldn’t have been any happier in that moment.”

Congrats to the happy couple!
