Paul McCartney may have been through a tumultuous and very public divorce, but he has not lost the ability to let love into his heart.

The former Beatle is now happily dating Nancy Shevell despite admitting he was in a “dark place” during his split from Heather Mills.

Shevell has been spending time with the former Beatle in London and on a recent vacation in the Caribbean.

And, as rumors (denied to PEOPLE by his rep) rage that he is set to wed for a third time, he admits he still “likes romance.”

“Does anyone like to be alone? Guys like romance. I do anyway,” he told Howard Stern in a recent chat.

“Things don’t always work out,” he added, refusing to indulge Stern’s listeners with too many details. “I like the idea of trying to be reasonably dignified and I don’t think it helps to really go mouthing off all the time. So in truth what I am trying to say is I don’t really talk about that.”

Talking of his latest experimental work as The Fireman, he says that “love and light” are included a lot on the album and that some of it is darker and edgier than past work.

Asked by Stern if it was correct to assume that this was reference to his failed marriage, saying, “you went through a dark place. McCartney concurs: “It could be true, I’m not a psychologist.”

Stern jousted with him about the period last summer when he was linked with Renée Zellweger, Christie Brinkley and Rosanna Arquette. “Howard,” McCartney, 66, rebuffs, “you read too many newspapers.”
