OK, one final Oscar item for the day. The fans lose. Both Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt have told the event’s producer, Richard Zanuck, that they are “unavailable” that night. “It’s disturbing,” Zanuck told Variety columnist Army Archerd, “that those stars who are neither nominated nor presenters don’t show up. This show is what we do (in the biz) and we celebrate movies at the Oscars in an entertaining way. The Academy is their friend. I remember going — with my parents — when everybody went to the Oscars because it was our industry’s show.” Zanuck’s father, the late Darryl Zanuck, founded 20th Century Fox.
