Celebrity Oscar: Don't Dance By People Staff Published on October 23, 1998 12:00 AM Share Tweet Pin Email Good news for those who watch the entire Academy Awards broadcast. After last year’s four-hour marathon, this year’s producers of the broadcast, the husband and wife team of Richard Zanuck and Lili Fini Zanuck, are promising that the show will be shorter: only 3 1/2 hours. “The pacing will be much closer to what the audience expects today,” Richard told The New York Times. One way of trimming the running time is the elimination of dance numbers — a move that has reportedly drawn letters of protest from choreographers. “We just don’t think dance is part of the vocabulary of motion pictures today,” said Zanuck (who, 35 years ago, when he was running 20th Century Fox, was responsible for the musicals “The Sound of Music,” “Doctor Dolittle” and “Hello, Dolly!”). He said dance was better confined to the Tonys and MTV Awards.
