Celebrity 'Orange Is the New Black', Macklemore, Demi Lovato and More Join LGBT Pride Festivities Worldwide See which celebs joined the LBGT community in a weekend of parades, parties and concerts By Kelli Bender Published on June 30, 2014 12:05 PM Share Tweet Pin Email Photo: Filmmagic; Splash News Online; Filmmagic Last weekend, members of the LGBT community – lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people – and their supporters celebrated Pride Month with parades, parties, marches and festivals. The celebrations occur every June in commemoration of New York City’s Stonewall riots which occurred on June 28, 1969, and are regarded as a pivotal moment in the LGBT social rights movements. From San Francisco to London spirited revelers took to the streets to celebrate, including several famous allies. Partying on not one, but two coasts was the cast of Orange Is the New Black, who are being called the unofficial winners of Pride. Trans activist and OITNB‘s resident hairdresser Laverne Cox served as the Grand Marshal of New York City’s Pride parade, sharing the title with Broadway and Glee star Jonathan Groff. Following close being Cox were costars Yael Stone (Lorna Morello), Samira Wiley (Poussey Washington), Dascha Polanco (Dayanara Diaz), Danielle Brooks (Taystee) and Matt McGorry (Officer Bennett) riding in their own OITNB-themed float. While the group kept New York parade patrons cheering, Lea DeLaria (Carrie “Big Boo” Black) riled up the crowds at San Francisco’s Pride parade. Also joining in on the New York festivities was Demi Lovato, who headlined the NYC Pride: Dance on the Pier concert, performing the song inspired by her gay grandfather, “Really Don’t Care.” Seattle kept things rocking, too, with a surprise Pride parade visit from resident rapper Macklemore. Ahead of the musician was Star Trek star George Takei, who served as the parade’s Grand Marshal. Oh my! Across the pond, Sir Ian McKellen kept revelers smiling, even through London’s rainy Pride weekend. After marching, the X-Men star introduced Eurovision winner Conchita Wurst to a crowd of excited spectators for a record-breaking Pride performance. Where there are celebrities, there will be excited Tweets and Instagram photos.
