Oprah Winfrey's Favorite Things: Her Pets
SUNNY & LAUREN
LUKE, LAYLA & GRACIE
In 2005, Oprah brought home three golden retriever puppies. "I thought we'd grow old together," she wrote. Sadly, two years later, Oprah lost Gracie in a tragic accident when the pup choked on a ball while out on a walk.
Stedman Graham presented a handsome brown cocker spaniel to Oprah for Christmas in 1994. The pooch was there with Stedman and Oprah – and even Halle Berry one night! – for 14 good years.
Perhaps more famous than Solomon was Sophie, the black cocker spaniel who joined the family in 1995. Oprah called Sophie "the true love in my life," and the pooch went everywhere with Mom – to the hair salon, to the dog park and especially to work. In 2008, at age 13, Sophie died of kidney failure.
In 2009, Oprah adopted a blonde cocker spaniel named Sadie (pictured upper left) from PAWS Chicago, a no-kill shelter. Following an introduction on The Oprah Winfrey Show, Sadie's brother Ivan found a home with Oprah, too. She later found out that both dogs had parvovirus. Ivan didn't make it, but Sadie survived, and has been a thriving member of the Winfrey household ever since.
