It’s the latest sign of One Direction‘s new normal.

Three weeks after Zayn Malik left the band, the remaining members have released their first official photo as a foursome.

In the (oddly depressing) picture, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson stand unsmiling against a plain background. It’s a stark reminder that things are different now.

But both One Direction and Zayn are moving forward after the split.

Malik will make his first official appearance on April 17 at Britain’s Asian Awards. “He is going, but he won’t do interviews,” a source confirms to PEOPLE.

Meanwhile, the band is currently working on the follow-up to 2014’s platinum seller Four. They began the project on Monday.

“First day writing the album,” Payne Tweeted on Monday, which bandmate Tomlinson re-Tweeted. “It’s gunna be a great day!”
