And then there were four.

One Direction made their award show debut as a quartet at the Billboard Music Awards on Sunday.

Louis Tomlinson, Harry Styles, Liam Payne and Niall Horan took the stage to present the award for TK at the show, looking a little lonesome without their recently departed band member Zayn Malik.

The group addressed Malik’s March exit head on when they hit the Billboard Music Awards red carpet, where Tomlinson confirmed that 1D is “not breaking up.” “We’re having too much fun! We’re making our record at the minute, we’re going on more tours, we’re coming out to the states in July – we’re looking forward to it, it’s all good.”

“A lot of new songs,” Styles added. “Each time we’ve gone out on tour we’ve just had so much fun we just try bigger and better than the last one, try to make sure everyone has a good time.”

“It is obviously a difficult thing to talk about but everything’s all fine now – we’re all good with him and he’s good with us. He left for his own reasons and he’s doing his thing now so you gotta do what you gotta do. One of the awards we’re winning tonight is also for him, he’s sharing in the experience with us even though he’s not here.”

The band made their first appearance as a foursome on the Late Late Show on Thursday, opening up to their friend James Corden about Malik’s departure.

“At first we were a little bit angry. We were surprised, but I think we all knew the general vibe that Zayn was feeling,” Payne said. “There were certain parts of this job that Zayn loved and certain parts of the job that he didn’t. If you don’t like your job, you’ve got to follow your heart sometimes and go where you need to go. There’s no argument with that.”
