“Cheerleader” singer Omi revealed the one woman who is always on his side isn’t a romantic partner – it’s his mom.

“My cheerleader is my mom and that will never change,” he tells PEOPLE. “The cheerleader you’re probably thinking about is a significant other but those will come and go. She’s not going anywhere. She will always be my mom and always be my cheerleader.

Omi released his first album, Me 4 U, last Friday – pick up a copy here – making both his and his cheerleader’s dreams come true.

“She was very proud,” he says. “It’s a natural reaction for a mother, especially with where I’m from, you need to create your own opportunities.”

The Jamaican crooner, who is a fan of Jason Derulo, John Legend and Michael Jackson has been putting out his own dance hits, like Hula Hoop, but says he wasn’t always one to be center stage.

Growing up, Omi says he was very shy and reserved.

“When I started recording, people said you have a really interesting vocal and that was sort of the cue for me to start pursuing this further,” he says. “And when I made it a career, I knew it would come with everything else automatically so I had to gain confidence and had to be able to project because that s the only way you’re going to be able to capture an audience.”
