The Road to Rio: How Olympic Athletes Are Preparing for the Games
A PROPER SEND-OFF
PARTAKING IN TRADITION
The meaning of all this isn't lost on diver Steel Johnson, who experienced a "surreal moment" when he got to hold the 1996 Olympic Torch while in Atlanta. He also took the time out to remind us that he was born 20 years ago, right before the start of that summer's Games. Way to make us feel old, Steel.
Open water swimmer Haley Anderson brought home silver at the 2012 Games, and while she's looking to top that accolade this year, she and her teammates have more on their minds than just their sport; the team took time out from training to make a special visit to The Children's Hospital of San Antonio.
PACKING ... A LOT
Wrestler Jordan Burroughs knows that balance is a major key to preparing for the Olympics, which is why he was happy to finish his training in the morning to make it home in time to spend time at the park with his family.
MEETING AN IDOL
Maggie Steffens may play water polo now, but growing up she was a soccer star who looked up to Mia Hamm; the two-time Olympic gold medalist, Steffens says, inspired the athlete to work towards competing at the Olympics. While prepping for this summer's Games, Steffens actually got to meet her "all-time idol," writing of the encounter: "I only hope to inspire a little girl as much as this humble amp strong woman did for me."
...OR MEETING THE PRESIDENT
Ibtihaj Muhammed – who is the first U.S. athlete to compete in a hijab – is a force to be reckoned with when it comes to fencing. But, we might be even more jealous of the fact that she got to attend a reception at the White House and meet POTUS himself.
ENJOYING DAYS OFF
Rugby player (and safety for the New England Patriots) Nate Ebner is making sure to appreciate the few moments he has off the field before the Games begin, which includes "Enjoying the day off with my girl at Point Loma." Aww!
GETTING A NEW 'DO
HAVING A SING-A-LONG
We support taking selfies at all times, but Phelps' last practice on American soil before the games seems like a pretty important occasion to capture – especially since it shows off those abs, too.
