Nick Jonas on Olivia Culpo Split: 'We Had a Great Two Years'

Dealing with a breakup is never easy, but it appears that Nick Jonas has nothing but love for ex-girlfriend Olivia Culpo.

Jonas, 22, spoke out for the first time since their split became public last week.

“I wish the best for her in the future and we had a great two years,” Jonas tells E! News.

Speaking to Extra’s Mario Lopez, the “Chains” singer added, “She’s an amazing person We had a great, beautiful few years together, but it’s been a crazy couple months and I wish the best to her for the future, but it’s tough.”

News of the breakup may come as a shock to those who followed the pair on social media, where they shared sweet Instagram and Twitter posts.

However, Jonas has talked about the difficulty of making a relationship working, admitting he was “no pro” at long-distance romances.

“It’s just about trying to take it one step at a time,” he told PEOPLE right before news of their split broke. “I think that the long distance thing can be tough, but try to stay in communication, keep it transparent and honest, and it should be okay.”

Following the breakup, the 23-year-old former Miss Universe winner shared her feelings on Instragram.

“Your heart just breaks, that’s all,” she captioned a photo of a sunset and palm trees. “Heartbreak is hard but you find more and more things to be grateful for every day.”

“Thank you all. Yes I’m going to be okay and I love u guys so so much.”

Nick’s mom Denise weighed in on the breakup, saying that she lets her children make their own decisions in their relationships: “I try to stay out of as a mom because all of my children’s girlfriends and friends become part of my family and my heart. I love all of them. And I try to stay out of it.”

When asked whether or not he was interested in starting a new relationship anytime soon, Jonas told E! News, “I don’t know, it’s too early. I’m focused on my work and that, to me, is the priority right now.”

And Jonas certainly does have a lot to focus on: He is starring in the upcoming Fox series Scream Queens and his Kingdom TV series is pinned for another season – all while he prepares to go on tour.
