New Liver for Grateful Dead Bassist

Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh is recuperating after undergoing a liver transplant at a Florida hospital. “He is doing just perfectly. They are delighted with his progress,” the band’s publicist, Dennis McNally, said. Lesh, 58, learned he had hepatitis C in 1992 and had been treated earlier this year for internal bleeding. Doctors at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville listed him in stable condition after Thursday’s transplant operation, McNally said. It is unclear how long Lesh will remain in the hospital, but McNally says doctors expect to be able to release him soon. He added that, in lieu of flowers, well-wishers are being encouraged to make blood donations.
