The Year in Love: All the New Couples Who Paired Off in 2016
PRINCE HARRY & MEGHAN MARKLE
In October, news broke that the British royal was secretly dating the Suits actress. Shortly after, a friend of the couple told PEOPLE, "Harry is pretty serious about her and she is pretty serious about him." Later, Markle's friend revealed to PEOPLE that the American actress is "head over heels" for the Brit, adding, "It's been an absolute fairytale for Meghan."
Prince Harry has already checked off a number of relationship milestones with Markle, including wearing matching jewelry, picking out a Christmas tree with her and introducing her to his father, Prince Charles.
ORLANDO BLOOM & KATY PERRY
Bloom and Perry were first linked in January when they were spotted flirting at a Golden Globes afterparty. It wasn't long before Bloom was jetting off on a Hawaiian getaway with Perry, introducing her to his 5-year-old son Flynn, who he shares with ex-wife Miranda Kerr, and taking her to his native England to meet his friends and family, including his mother. A source told PEOPLE that Bloom "would love to settle down with Katy and have more kids."
The singer sent engagement rumors swirling in November when she stepped out with a hefty ring on that finger after spending Thanksgiving with Bloom and her family. According to a source, the couple plans to top off their 2016 with a holiday vacation and "are happier than ever."
ROB KARDASHIAN & BLAC CHYNA
To say the least, 2016 was a whirlwind year of romance for Kardashian and Chyna. Relationship rumors first started in January when Chyna posted an Instagram photo of herself wrapped up in a tattooed arm that resembled Kardashian's. After some initial drama involving Chyna's complicated past with Kardashian's famous family, the pair officially went on to enjoy a P.D.A.-packed relationship. The model seemed to have a positive effect on the once-reclusive Kardashian, who began working out, traveling and being more active on social media.
By April, Kardashian had put a ring on it, and the couple happily announced their engagement. Then in May, the couple dropped their baby news bombshell, shortly before announcing their reality show Rob & Chyna. The couple's daughter, Dream Renée Kardashian, was born on Nov. 10.
JOE JONAS & SOPHIE TURNER
LUKE ROCKHOLD & DEMI LOVATO
After breaking up with Wilmer Valderrama in June after six years, Lovato found a new partner in the UFC star. PEOPLE learned that the couple "had gone on a couple dates" by August, with a source revealing, "they met through friends a couple months ago." In November, the couple graduated to public appearances together and even made the relationship Instagram official.
KHLOÉ KARDASHIAN & TRISTAN THOMPSON
The Keeping Up with the Kardashians star and the NBA champ were first linked in September after going on a Labor Day weekend getaway. "He’s a really nice, good guy and she seems very happy with him," a source told PEOPLE at the time. Since then, they've been spotted canoodling at a Drake concert, flaunted their superhero Halloween costumes, joined forces for a Thanksgiving turkey drive and wore matching Cleveland Cavaliers bling. Kardashian's close friend Khadijah Haqq told PEOPLE the couple is "the cutest" in October. "Not only do they look really good, I think it’s really special to find two people that there’s an element of joy and laughter that all of us are supposed to attain in relationships," she added of the twosome.
MAC MILLER & ARIANA GRANDE
The rumored lovebirds confirmed their romance with a cozy September Instagram post after Grande subtly revealed the relationship on the MTV VMA red carpet. "We hung out for a long time and everything just happened organically," Miller shared with PEOPLE in September. "We love making music together – we do that always. But she’s my best friend in the world." The couple released a steamy video for their latest collaboration, "My Favorite Part," in December.
LEONARDO DICAPRIO & NINA AGDAL
A source told PEOPLE in July that it was "just a fling" between the actor and model, but they seem to have only gotten closer since the summer. They comforted each other after a minor car crash in the Hamptons in August, and made no attempts to hide their P.D.A. during an October outing in N.Y.C. That month, a source told PEOPLE the pair "seem more serious ... he constantly holds her hand and kisses her. Nina seems to enjoy Leo’s company too. She acts very giddy around him."
JWAN YOSEF & RICKY MARTIN
The singer made his red carpet debut with his painter love at the amfAR Inspiration Gala in February. Then in November, Martin announced that Yosef had become his fiancé. "I proposed," he revealed on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. "I was really nervous. But I got on my knees and I took out — not a box — I just had them in a little velvet pouch ... Instead of saying, ‘Will you marry me?’ I said, ‘I got you something.’ I said, ‘I want to spend my life with you.’ And he was like, 'What is the question?’ [I said] 'Would you marry me?' "
JENNY SLATE & CHRIS EVANS
In May, sources confirmed to PEOPLE that the actors had started dating after working on the film Gifted together. The news came a few weeks after it was announced that Slate was splitting with husband Dean Fleischer-Camp after four years. "The first night we hung out I was like ‘Oh, I could hang out with Chris for like 90 hours,' " Slate had previously said of her costar on Anna Faris's podcast Unqualified.
Evans and Slate made their first public appearance as a couple at the June premiere of the actress's animated movie The Secret Life of Pets.
LAURA PREPON & BEN FOSTER
The new couple alert sounded in July after the actors were spotted spending time together in New York City. Because the private pair largely kept their relationship out of the press, fans were pleasantly surprised in October when the Orange Is the New Black star sported an engagement ring at her first red carpet appearance with Foster.
MEGHAN TRAINOR & DARYL SABARA
The singer spilled the beans about her new beau in October with a sweet Instagram post. During an appearance on Chelsea later that month, Trainor revealed that friend Chloë Grace Moretz had played matchmaker for her and Sabara. "Chloë Grace Moretz is a friend of mine, and day one of meeting her, I was like, 'You know anybody that I could date? Or love? Whatever.' And she’s like, 'I know the nicest guy in the world, Daryl, and you should meet him.' I was like, 'Daryl? Okay,' " she recalled. The pop star added that her boyfriend "plays guitar and piano and sings to me all the time."
In December, Trainor dished to PEOPLE about how she celebrated her five-month anniversary with Sabara, saying, "[We went to] our favorite sushi place we love that's real close to the house because we're lazy to drive far away ... He got me puzzles because he knows I'm obsessed with puzzles right now. So we sat and talked and did that all night which was the most fun I've had in a minute."
AMBER ROSE & VAL CHMERKOVSKIY
Rose, who was partners with Chmerkovskiy's big brother Maksim on Dancing with the Stars, spent her October birthday party getting flirty with her new man. "They were giggly and seemed very comfortable together," an onlooker shared with PEOPLE. Not long after the birthday festivities, the stars partied together on Halloween in coordinated costumes.
According to a source who chatted with PEOPLE in December, Rose and Chmerkovskiy "are solid and in a good place ... They're both very happy with how things are going."
ALY RAISMAN & COLTON UNDERWOOD
Raisman and Underwood began secretly dating following the August MTV VMAs and some social media flirting, the Olympic gymnast revealed to PEOPLE at the Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year Ceremony in December. The athletes were able to work out their busy schedules, and the dedicated NFL player even drove 90 minutes back and forth for his second and third dates with Raisman. "Someone who brings out the best in me. My girl looked absolutely stunning last night," Underwood captioned a cute couple photo of the two from the Sportsperson of the Year Ceremony.
