Now that Glee star Naya Rivera has shared the news of her surprise marriage to Ryan Dorsey exclusively with PEOPLE, here are five things you need to know about her new husband.

1. He’s a Country Boy at Heart
Dorsey is originally from coal mining country. He grew up in Charleston, West Virginia, and dreamed of being a baseball player before “high school fate derailed those plans and landed him on the stage, where he fell in love with a new dream,” according to his website.

2. He Has a Supportive Family
With the encouragement of his family – which includes his mother, father, brother and step-parents – Dorsey moved from West Virginia to New York City, where he attended the New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts, before packing up and moving to Los Angeles.

3. Yes, He’s an Actor
The handsome, ripped Dorsey has been busy of late performing in a number of TV shows, including appearing on Parks and Recreation and guest-starring on the final two episodes of Southland. And

4. He’s Sharing the Screen with Mel Gibson and William H. Macy
“It’s OFFICIAL!” Dorsey Tweeted in May. “I’m gonna be making my big screen debut opposite Mel Gibson! Can’t wait to get2work!” The actor will be starring with Gibson and Macy in Blood Father, a 2015 film in which an ex-con reunites with his estranged, wayward 16-year-old daughter to protect her from drug dealers who are trying to kill her.

5. He and Rivera Are Longtime Friends
Dorsey met Rivera four years ago after he moved to L.A., and they remained friends until their friendship blossomed into a romance after Rivera’s engagement to rapper Big Sean ended just three months ago.
