Naya Rivera's Highs and Lows with Husband Ryan Dorsey — in Her Own Words
Naya Rivera and Ryan Dorsey surprised fans in 2014 when they decided to tie the knot just three months after the Glee star broke off her engagement to Big Sean. But the marriage hasn’t been without its hiccups.
On Saturday night, Rivera was arrested and charged with misdemeanor domestic battery after an alleged altercation with Dorsey in Kanawha County, West Virginia, police confirmed to PEOPLE.
In a video captured by local news station WSAZ (who was first to report the news), a soft-spoken Rivera was shown handcuffed and dressed down in a hoodie and dark pants while being arraigned. The outlet reported Rivera was released on a $1,000 PR bond and picked up by her father-in-law.
“It is what it is, but I’m glad that my family is together,” she told PEOPLE at the time, adding that it was “a personal decision.”
“After much consideration, we have made the decision to end our marriage,” the former couple told PEOPLE in a statement at the time. “Our priority is and always will be our beautiful son that we share together. We will continue to be great co-parenting partners for him. We ask for respect and privacy for our family during this difficult time.”
In 2014, Rivera was accused of “switching grooms” when rapper Big Sean called off his engagement to the actress just three months before her wedding to Dorsey. However, the actress had a long romantic history with Dorsey.
“To this day, I’ll be doing interviews and people will be, like, ‘Oh my God! Y’all were friends?’ ” Rivera previously said of the media portraying her relationship with Dorsey as solely platonic before their engagement. “I’m, like, ‘What are you talking about?’ ”
During her early years on Glee, Rivera and Dorsey dated briefly before ending things so she could focus more on her career. A few weeks after the split, Rivera found out she was pregnant with Dorsey’s child and decided to terminate the pregnancy without informing him.
“When I made that decision [to have an abortion], I made it by myself, as I feel is the case for a lot of women, and I did not share it with Ryan at the time,” said Rivera, who chronicles her relationship with Dorsey in her memoir Sorry Not Sorry.
The two would remain distant until Dorsey reached out with his condolences after her split form Big Sean.
“By the time we sort of reconnected, I was like, gosh, there’s a reason why you keep coming back in my life and we keep coming back together,” she wrote.
Three short months later, the old friends-turned-lovers married on July 19, 2014 in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, in front of a small group of family members.
“We feel truly blessed to be joined as husband and wife,” the couple previously told PEOPLE in an exclusive statement. “Our special day was fated and everything we could have ever asked for.”
A little over a year later, the two announced they were expecting a little one.
“Ryan and I feel so blessed and can’t wait to welcome the newest member of our family,” the actress, who originally posted a photo of a bun in the oven on Instagram, later wrote on her website.
Documenting her pregnancy journey on her PEOPLE.com blog, Rivera described the good, the bad, and the awkward stages of pregnancy – including her intimate moments with her hubby.
“Things like sex with my husband became a bit odd for me due to the fact that I was now limited to about two positions in order to not squash — as my husband puts it — ‘its roof’ or have the baby (my belly) staring him in the face,” she wrote. “I feel like men are constantly imagining their baby winking at them when they make love to their pregnant wives thus making sexy times more few and far between.”
In September 2015, the happy couple welcomed their first child together, son Josey Hollis Dorsey (who is now 1).
Rivera, who first revealed her abortion in an excerpt from her memoir to PEOPLE, stated that her husband’s reaction could not have been more understanding.
“He said, ‘In the short time that we dated, I wish that I could have done something to make you feel like you could have trusted me with that information because I would have loved to have been there with you,’ ” Rivera said. “I think it was the kindest, best thing that any man could have ever said in that situation,” she said during the interview. “It just made me love him that much more.”
“It was good to tell our story and put the truth out there,” Rivera said of sharing the couple’s story. “We’ve been married now two years and have a gorgeous son and it feels good to let everyone know what really happened.”
