Moviefone Is Canceled Ahead of Rebranding
Sounds like Mr. Moviefone is hanging up.
This weekend, following the automated service’s standard greeting – “Hello, and welcome to Moviefone!” – callers were met with an unfamiliar voice announcing the service’s demise.
“The 777-FILM numbers will no longer be in service, but we’re still here to help,” it said. “To buy tickets and for all of your showtime information please download the free Moviefone app on your smartphone or iPad.”
Launched in 1989, the AOL-owned service offered a listing of local showtimes for residents of America’s biggest cities by dialing 777-FILM. Russ Leatherman, the voice of the greeting that’s become so much a part of the cultural zeitgeist it was once a Seinfeld storyline, left AOL last November.
The cancellation – which will be happen in about a month – comes before a planned reintroduction of the Moviefone brand by AOL and web and television company, BermanBraun, The New York Times reports.
