Speaking of Mariah Carey, the singer’s appearance on NBC’s ”Today” on Monday morning helped maintain the show’s number one ratings position, according to Variety. Carey had been scheduled to appear on rival CBS’s new ”Early Show” on the day of Bryant Gumbel’s debut with co-host Jane Clayson, but canceled in favor of ”Today” at the last minute because ”The Early Show” reportedly failed to obtain the proper permit for an outdoor concert. While Gumbel’s show netted a 20 percent boost in its rating pre-Gumbel, ”Today,” featuring a live set by Carey, pushed the program well above its normally dominant audience share. ABC’s ”Good Morning America” followed ”Today” in the ratings and outperformed ”The Early Show.”
