The Spanish model, 23, was proclaimed the winner of the global competition in the southern Chinese island resort of Sanya, according to USA Today.
Lalaguna Royo, who impressed the judges with her public speaking skills, has a degree in pharmacology and plans to pursue a master’s degree in nutrition. She is the first-ever Spanish Miss World.

Russia’s Sofia Nikitchuk and Indonesia’s Maria Harfanti received second and third place, respectively, in the competition. Noticeably absent from the ceremony, however, was Anastasia Lin, the Canadian contestant.
In late November, Lin, a China-born Toronto actress, was denied a Chinese visa and barred from boarding a flight to the beauty pageant finals in China.
Lin claims that she was denied entry into the country because she has been outspoken in her advocacy for human rights in China.
“My denial was unfortunate, but not entirely unexpected,” she wrote in a Facebook post. “The Chinese government has barred me from the competition for political reasons. They are trying to punish me for my beliefs and prevent me from speaking out about human rights issues.”
