From the “God-centered” ceremony to the “out of control, crazy reception, Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert‘s Texas wedding left guests “smiling from ear to ear,” says Lambert’s mother, Bev, in PEOPLE Country’s new cover story.

“It was a really fun and light-hearted wedding,” Bev says of the Texas affair held May 14 at the Don Strange Ranch. Down-home touches were everywhere, from the pup parade during the bridal party entrance and the cowhide the couple stood on to say their vows, to the rowdy, karaoke sing-a-long reception for the couple s 560 guests. “Every person there said it was far and away the best party they’d ever been to.”

Before the short ceremony, Miranda (who wore the gown her mother wore at her 1979 wedding) had her bridesmaids pray over her. “That was very emotional for her – she had some pretty tearful moments,” Bev says. And though he rarely has a serious moment in public, Shelton was clearly moved too. “He could not take his eyes off of her the entire day,” she says.

Adds Shelton’s close pal, singer Neal McCoy (who kicked off the reception party with a rollicking set), “With that first kiss and the pronouncement, they just lit up and everybody knew it was right.”
