Miley Cyrus & Liam Hemsworth: PDA Around the World
As rumors swirled of trouble in paradise, Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth stood firm, attending the April 8 premiere of his film Paranoia side-by-side. But the tense poses for the formerly loved-up pair let on that all was not right, and several months later, the two officially /called it quits on Sept. 16. Take a look back at how the once set-to-wed pair kicked off a troubled romance.
"Number one is my relationship with Liam. That's what I feel the most confident in," Miley Cyrus, 20, told Cosmopolitan shortly before taking a sun-filled vacation in January with 23-year-old fiancé Hemsworth. And despite recent reports the engagement is off, Cyrus Tweeted a denial, telling her followers, "I didn't call off my wedding. Taking a break from social media. #draining."
Marking sister Noah's birthday on Jan. 8, Cyrus kept a firm grasp on her man while headed into nightclub Level 3. "I think there's a masculinity about [Australian guys] that is probably like growing up in the South, like what I did," she dished about her beau. "They are a little bit more respectful, I suppose."
It wouldn't be a Cyrus-Hemsworth Christmas without the couple's merry band of pooches, including adoptee Happy, who posed for photos with the pair (and their mystery wedding rings) at their L.A. home over the holidays. "Liam and I have a really good relationship," she said. "We know each other and would never do anything to hurt each other."
While Hemsworth filmed Paranoia in the City of Brotherly Love during July 2012, Cyrus was showing her guy plenty of love with frequent on-set visits. "Life is too short not to be with the person you want to be with," she gushed to Marie Claire shortly after getting engaged. "I don't really care about the wedding or the piece of paper as much as I do the promise we've made to each other."
"I'm not really a big lovey person. I'm not, like, mushy," Cyrus told PEOPLE, explaining her love for Hemsworth, whom she met on the set of 2010's The Last Song. "I was pretty much like, 'I'm going to die alone!' Liam was the first person that made me want to be in a real relationship." No wonder, then, that Cyrus (here, at the film's Hollywood premiere) said yes when Hemsworth popped the question.
"[Our first kiss in The Last Song] was on the first day of filming in the movie. We have this scene where we frolic in the water. So I frolic very well apparently, and after that I got to keep him," Cyrus said – and the proof is in this 2009 picture of the falling-in-love twosome romping on set in the Savannah surf.
With a no-holds-barred smooch at the Nashville airport, Cyrus and Hemsworth took their romance public in August 2009. "From the outside we look so different," the singer told PEOPLE. "I'm pretty much in, like, all black and very into fashion. He's so surfer boy. He could care less. But it's about the inside and how you feel and connect spiritually. We connect in that way."
"I think when you're trying to play it cool and you're like, 'Oh, I won't text back for like the next hour,' that's when you know it's more serious," said Cyrus, playing it anything but cool with Hemsworth in France in December 2009. "You have no idea how many times I was like, 'Oh, he called. I'm not going to call back tomorrow.' When it gets confusing and you're overthinking it, you must really like someone."
"I met him two weeks before filming. We went on a Starbucks date," Cyrus has said about her first encounter with Hemsworth. "That's what you do when you meet your costar that you have to be kissing for months and months and months, and I was sold." A year later, as seen here at the airport in Canada, the relationship – and their love of Starbucks – was still going strong.
Say "cheese"! Cyrus and Hemsworth pose for a loved-up photo during a Hawaiian getaway in 2011. "I think we're both deeper than normal people – what they think and how they feel," Cyrus told Teen Vogue about her beau. "He's very grateful for what he has, but he doesn't let it go to his head. I'm like that too."
Snuggling up down under! The Australian-born Hemsworth stole a cuddle during a 2011 visit to Sydney. "I've never gotten along with someone so well," Cyrus gushed about her guy.

Hemsworth holds tight to Cyrus as they hit the Michigan waves on water scooters in 2011. "She's a tough girl, that one," the Hunger Games star boasted about his girlfriend – and now fiancée.
"He's really tall. I thought, 'Either I'm going to have to be in heels or standing on something for this entire movie!'" Cyrus – here managing only to reach her boyfriend's biceps during an August 2011 outing – said of the prospect of kissing her costar.
