Just in time for a big trip to Africa, Michelle Obama and the White House have joined Instagram.

Her first photo on @michelleobama? A shot of her and daughter Malia from their trip.

The photo caption reads: “My first instagram! So inspired and so impressed by these extraordinary young women. -mo #FLOTUSinAfrica”

Her participation in the popular photo-sharing app comes at a perfect time – allowing the fashion-forward and health-conscious first lady, 49, to share her life for fans and family alike.

Meanwhile, a video was posted to the official White House Instagram account showing the welcome the Obama family received upon arriving in Dakar, Senegal. “Dakar welcomes the President and First Lady on the way to their official welcome at the Presidential Palace,” the video was captioned.

Obama is expected to use her time on her Africa trip this week to tout the values of a strong education. Although she is accompanying President Obama on an official tour of Senegal, South Africa and Tanzania, Obama and her daughters Malia and Sasha will have their own itinerary, visiting with middle school students and other youth as well as taking in cultural performances.

As an added bonus, Obama will answer previously submitted questions from PEOPLE readers via video next week.
