After nearly 13 years of marriage, Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones are planning to divorce. In a joint statement, the couple announced the decision, saying TK.
One of Hollywood’s highest-profile couples, they have faced more than their fair share of ups and downs over the last three years – between Douglas’s 2010 cancer battle and Zeta-Jones’s struggles with bipolar II disorder.
In a recent interview with the Daily Telegraph‘s Stella magazine, Zeta-Jones, 43, spoke about how hard it was to see her husband, 68, undergo treatment for Stage 4 throat cancer, and suggested “not sleeping, the stress and worry” took a toll on her.
“I wasn’t as strong as I thought I could have been,” she said of the time he was receiving chemotherapy. “I look back and I can’t believe the strength he had,” she said.
The couple, who have two children, Dylan, 12, and Carys, 10, haven’t appeared at an event together since April 22. Soon after, Zeta-Jones checked into a treatment center for the second time to address her bipolar II disorder.
Still, Douglas was upbeat when he headed to the Cannes Film Festival solo in May to promote his role as Liberace in HBO’s Behind the Candelabra. Asked about Zeta-Jones’ treatment, he said, “Things are good. Bipolar is a slippery path, and I think sometimes you don’t think you need any meds, and you get away from them, and all of a sudden, whoa. She s doing a really good job of getting a 10,000-mile checkup. She s doing fine, and I’m proud of her.”
