Mellencamps: House Problems

Rocker John Mellencamp and his wife grew suspicious about the builder overseeing construction of their new lake house when they discovered some structural defects. So the couple wanted to see his billing records. On Monday, felony charges of forgery and theft were filed against the homebuilder, Timothy Eldredge, who is accused of overcharging the couple by at least $134,000 for work on the singer’s home. Eldredge is accused of defrauding the Mellencamps by falsifying invoices from subcontractors and double-billing for work on the home near Bloomington, IN.

  • Earlier this year the Mellencamps filed a civil lawsuit accusing Eldredge and his company, The Eldredge Group Inc., of committing fraud and failing to provide quality construction materials for the unfinished home. That lawsuit, which is pending, said some parts of the home had to be demolished and rebuilt. The home was to be valued at more than $2 million.
