Mel Walks on Water

Mel Gibson comes to town and they drain the swamp. The expansive lagoon system at the Cypress Gardens nature preserve in Goose Creek, S.C., was reduced to mud and cypress trees so a Hollywood film crew can scout for possible hazards during the filming of Gibson’s upcoming movie, “The Patriot.” Gibson plays a fictional character loosely based on South Carolina Revolutionary War Gen. Francis Marion, known as “the Swamp Fox” for his guerrilla-like tactics. Part of the movie, which will be filmed at Cypress Gardens this fall, calls for Mel and others on horseback to disappear into the woods after ambushing British troops. Cypress trees and stumps beneath the swamp waters could pose problems as horses plod through. The movie is set to be released next summer.
