A source confirms to PEOPLE that Mel Gibson has struck up a romance with a young film writer who also happens to be a champion equestrian vaulter.

Gibson, 59 and Rosalind Ross, 24, recently spent time together at his Costa Rica compound.

Ross, who won a gold medal at the World Equestrian Games in Kentucky in 2010, is also a budding screenwriter. She studied writing and literature at Emerson College and is currently one of the writers of the El Rey Network s action series Matador.
