He already has an Oscar. Is he going for a Ph.D., too?

Matthew McConaughey was spotted on campus Friday at Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts, but he wasn’t attending classes – he’s filming Sea of Trees with costar Naomi Watts.

“A lot of students were interested in seeing him,” Clark student Mitchell Gamache tells PEOPLE. “The school emailed the student body telling them shooting would be today only. Classes still went on in the building, but the rooms they were shooting in were closed off.”

Dressed in a gray trench coat, collared shirt and sweater vest, McConaughey looked every bit the academic as strolled through campus. His look was topped off with a pair of dark brown glasses.

McConaughey, 44, was also spotted in the Sackler Science Center building, and earlier this week, he was snapped mowing a lawn in a residential area outside Worcester.

McConaughey has been in the Worcester area this summer, staying with wife Camilla Alves and their three children.

“He’s really nice, really cool,” says a source from the set. “Pretty much how you’d imagine he’d be. Very ‘hakuna matata.’ ”

Sea of Trees is the story of a suicidal American who befriends a Japanese man in the Aokigahara forest in Japan. The production has used the rural areas of Purgatory Chasm and Princeton, Massachusetts, to double as the forest.
