The repercussions of Donald Trump‘s testy relationship with Mexico are now impacting even his ex-wife.

In a new interview with The Daily Beast, Marla Maples – who was wed to Trump in 1993 until their 1997 split – said she was forced to use an alias while doing charity work in the country.

“Everyone was urging me not to go to Mexico,” Maples, 52, told The Daily Beast. “They were just concerned of all the comments that were made, and I was being advised by many people that I really do trust that it wasn’t a good time to go to Mexico, it could be a danger, even being the ex-wife.”

Trump famously kicked off his campaign using the words “criminals” and “rapists” to refer to Mexicans. He has continually touted his plan to build a wall along the Mexico-U.S. border to prevent immigrants from the country from entering America.

Maples, who was helping to install water filtration systems with The Waterbearers and charity group Waves for Water, said that, for safety precautions, she chose a pseudonym while traveling.

“I’m big into intuition and trusting where I’m meant to be at the right time,” she said, “and this was just a great opportunity.”

The trip ultimately went smoothly, said Maples – who shares daughter Tiffany, 22, with Trump.
