Where's the Hoodie? Mark Zuckerberg Shows Off Beer-Filled Fridge in Unearthed Interview from Facebook's Early Days
The 11-year-old video, which resurfaced this week, shows the Facebook founder talking about his plans for the then-tiny startup
In major throwback news, here’s your chance to see Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg in 2005, when he was just a Harvard dropout with a little startup called “The Facebook” and a fridge full of beer.
An interview with a baby-faced Zuckerberg (sans his now-signature hoodie) has been making the rounds on the Internet since Sunday, when Silicon Valley-based investor and writer Semil Shah tweeted a link to the 11-year-old video.
In the video, Zuckerberg, now 31, describes Facebook’s beginnings and evolution – all while holding a red solo cup.
“We launched it at Harvard in early February of 2004, and within a couple of weeks, two thirds of the school had signed up,” he says. “So at that point, my roommates were like, ‘This is pretty cool, I bet this would work at other schools,’ but we were all busy with classes and stuff so we kinda just wanted to make sure it would work before going any further with it.”
Zuckerberg explains how they went on to expand “The Facebook” to Columbia, Yale and Stanford, where it was equally well received.
“We were like, alright, this is pretty sweet, let’s just go all out and see how many schools we can launch this at as quickly as possible,” he says. “So we closed out the year with, I think, 29 schools, came out to Palo Alto for the summer just to hang out because Palo Alto’s kind of this mythical place where all the start-ups come from, and got ready to launch at another 150 schools when the year started.”
The video periodically cuts away from the young tech guru’s story to show his friends doing a keg stand, Zuckerberg showing off a fridge fully stocked with nothing but beer and ketchup and the colorfully graffiti’d walls.

Surprisingly, at the time of this interview, Zuckerberg wasn’t especially concerned with expanding his social networking site outside of the college network.
“There doesn’t necessarily have to be more – like a lot of people are focused on taking over the world or doing the biggest thing, getting the most users, and I think part of making a difference and doing something cool is focusing intensely,” he says. “There was a level of service that we could provide when we were just at Harvard that we can’t provide for all of the colleges, and there’s a level of service that we can provide when we’re a college network that we wouldn’t be able to provide if we went to other types of things.”
He continues: “I really just want to see everyone focus on college and create a cool college directory product that is very relevant for students and has a lot of information that people care about when they’re in college.”
A year later, however, in September 2006, Facebook became open to anyone at least 13 years old. As of December 2015, the site had 1.04 billion daily active users, according to Facebook.
