Things have a strange life cycle on the Internet. That’s about the only explanation there is for why this video of Japanese viral star Hajime has been popping up again.

There’s not much to the video: Hajime straps a bunch of Mentos to his body with tape and jumps in a bathtub full of Coke Zero. It does not appear to be an ad for Mentos or Coke Zero, and the experiment does not offer any conclusion, scientific or otherwise. In short, there’s absolutely no redeeming value to it.

But the numbers don’t lie: Hajime’s original video, from July 2014, has 6.1 million views on YouTube. The ripped version, by News of the World from January, has 1.2 million views.

Personally, we really enjoy the lower-quality version; it’s got a nice sordid feel to it thanks to the lower resolution. Seems like something we should’ve been watching in the back room of a Times Square shop in the late 1970s.
