A 24-year-old man was pulled to his death after climbing out on a ledge in an attempt to save a suicidal 19-year-old at a University of Hawaii dorm, police say.

Both men dropped 14 floors and were taken to the hospital in critical condition after the fall on Monday, the Associated Press reports.

The 24-year-old later died of his injuries. The 19-year-old remains in critical condition.

University spokesperson Dan Meisenzahl says the pair were guests of a student who lived in a campus dorm and had invited people over. Neither of the victims was a student at the university.

“It’s a terrible tragedy – the last thing we want to happen … whether they are students or not,” he told the AP. “Of course, our condolences go out to their friends and family.”

There were about 20 students living in the Hale Wainani dorm at the time; during the Fall. When the school year starts, the dorm houses about 600 students.

The names of the two men and the student who invited them over have not been released.

The university is investigating if there were any violations of the student code.
