Man Charged With Stalking 'Idol' Contestant

Jessica Sierra, one of last year's finalists, is reportedly the object of a fan's affection

A California man is facing charges that he stalked former American Idol contestant Jessica Sierra, sending her threatening voice mail messages and appearing uninvited at her grandmother’s Florida house.

Daniel Robert Young, 59, was being held without bond Thursday after his arrest Tuesday at the Tampa residence, police tell the Associated Press.

Young placed nearly 40 voice mail messages since mid-September telling the 20-year-old Sierra that after seeing her on the FOX talent show last year (she was one of the 10 finalists) he is in love with her and is willing to go to jail for it, police say. Along with the messages, Young also sent Sierra a necklace, a bracelet and dozens of long-stemmed roses, police add.

“It was like the more I stopped answering my phone and stopped talking to him, he got even more mad,” Sierra said. “He was like, ‘Answer your damn phone when I call you.'”

The singer recently got an apartment in Nashville. Young told police he recently bought a house in Gainesboro, Tenn., about 90 miles away, authorities said.

When he arrived in Tampa on Tuesday from California, Young called Sierra’s cellphone twice and asked her to pick him up, police spokeswoman Laura McElroy said. “I told him, ‘I’m not coming to pick you up,'” Sierra said. “He said, ‘If you don’t come pick me up, I’m taking a cab to your grandparents’ house.'”

Sierra then alerted police, who met Young at the home, McElroy tells AP. Young was booked into jail Tuesday with bail set at $500 on the misdemeanor stalking charge, which is punishable by up to a year in prison. But a judge revoked the bail after a prosecutor said Young had two prior arrests for violent crimes in California.

In more upbeat Idol news, three former contestants from the show are taking Broadway by storm. Besides Frenchie Davis’s continuing to bring down the house in the long-running Rent, and the previously announced news that Josh Strickland will play the title role of Disney’s upcoming Tarzan, Idol runnerup up Diana DeGarmo will join the cast of the musical comedy Hairspray. Starting Feb. 7 she will play Penny Pingleton, the best friend of the show’s heroine, Tracy Turnblad.
