Madonna took a break Tuesday from her family holiday in India to tour the slums of Mumbai.

The singer, 49, strolled around Cuffe Paradehigh, a seafront neighborhood where million-dollar high-rises nestle next to simple huts.

While there, Madonna and a female companion visited a fisherman’s wharf-side home, according to Reuters. Later, as a teeming crowd of locals and photographers gathered, the duo checked out a roadside vegetarian restaurant.

From there, Madonna headed off to tour a motorcycle mechanic’s garage. Her unlikely chaperone? According to reports, she was escorted by Gregory David Roberts, a convicted bank robber who has lived in the city for some years after fleeing from an Australian jail in 1980.

Roberts, author of the novel Shantaram, has set up a free health service for Mumbai’s poor, and also does some teaching.

Before reaching Mumbai, Madonna ushered in the New Year along with husband Guy Ritchie and their children at the luxury tented Wilderness Camp in Rajasthan.
