The singer recalls a touching memory with her children

The queen of reinvention is cherishing the past as she fights for son Rocco.

On Wednesday, Madonna shared a sweet throwback photo capturing the superstar’s bond with three of her children – Lourdes, Rocco and David.

“Days of innocence. In Malawi. How I miss this time,” the singer, 57, wrote in her Instagram caption, which includes a prayer emoji.

The image shows a smiling Madonna surrounded by her little ones in the African nation she has championed in philanthropic work and where she adopted David and daughter Mercy. Her arms are wrapped around Rocco, now 15, who is at the center of an international custody battle Madonna is waging with ex-husband Guy Ritchie, 47.

The former couple’s intense battle began when Rocco left his mom’s Rebel Heart tour to live with his father in the U.K. in December. As sources previously told PEOPLE, the teenager gravitates to the Sherlock Holmes director’s laid-back parenting style.

A New York judge reportedly ordered Ritchie to return their son to the U.S. in December and Madonna later attempted to persuade Rocco to come home when she visited him in between tour legs.

However, Rocco remains with Ritchie and his family – including wife Jacqui Ainsley and their three children – in England, where Rocco was allegedly spotted smoking with friends earlier this month.

“This is exactly what Madonna has been afraid of,” a source told PEOPLE of the photos. “Rocco still isn’t back in school – and now this. He is just a rebellious teenager, but he needs guidance and direction from his father.”

Both Madonna and Ritchie are set to appear in New York Supreme Court for a rescheduled hearing on March 2.
