Madonna is fighting to protect her name. The Associated Press reports that the Material Mom — whose full name is Madonna Ciccone — has lodged a complaint against New Jersey entrepreneur Dan Parisi with the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland, asking that the body’s World Intellectual Property Organization step in and return to her the Internet domain name madonna.com. Parisi had reportedly used his site to post adult-oriented material, which he has since removed. “We do not believe that because Ms. Ciccone named her act after the Virgin Mary that gives her the right to stop any other party from using the word ‘madonna’ as a title of their Web site,” Parisi told the AP, prompting the singer’s publicist, Liz Rosenberg, to respond: “She happens to be the most famous Madonna in the world, so I think she certainly has every right to try to protect a Web site called Madonna.” A ruling is expected by mid-September.
