The 12 Years a Slave Oscar nominee talks fame and tabloid rumors with Ellen DeGeneres
Lupita Nyong’o has not yet gotten used to becoming a tabloid darling, even as her face now graces newspapers and magazines around the world.
But the Hollywood newbie and Academy Award nominee for 12 Years A Slave, her first feature film role, showed Ellen DeGeneres Friday that she’s happily game for the rumor mill that has repeatedly connected her with fellow Oscar nominee Jared Leto as both have been seen together at awards season events.
“I thought Miley Cyrus broke us up,” Nyong’o, 30, cracked as she discussed her rise to fame this year on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
“You know it’s crazy cause when I read these rumors, they’re so detailed that even I start to question whether they’re true or not,” Nyong’o told DeGeneres of the fame bubble. “I know I’ve believed them in the past and now I guess I can’t believe anything.”
While the SAG Award winner has been super busy and constantly traveling, she recently stopped into a Hudson News outlet at the airport and caught herself on the cover of New York magazine. “I bought one and was trying to be discreet, but then the guy behind the counter was like ‘Oh, my God! You look like her’ and I was like ya nevermind.”
With the Academy Awards ceremony a little more than a week away, Nyong’o has already emerged as a fashion favorite, making a stunning entrance on awards show red carpets and earning multiple magazine covers as she sets the style world abuzz.
DeGeneres, who is set to host the show, later offered Nyong’o her own fashionable good luck charm for Oscar night on March 2 – a pair of sequined underwear.
