'RHONY' 's Luann D'Agostino Ends 7-Month Marriage as Source Says 'It Was Obvious They Weren't on the Same Page'

Luann D'Agostino released a statement about her divorce on Twitter: "It's with great sadness that Tom & I agreed to divorce. We care for each other very much, hope you respect our privacy during this sad time!"

It’s over for Luann D’Agostino and husband Tom.

The Real Housewives of New York City star announced Thursday via her Twitter account that she and her husband of seven months are calling it quits.

“It’s with great sadness that Tom & I agreed to divorce,” wrote the former Countess. “We care for each other very much, hope you respect our privacy during this sad time!”

A close friend tells PEOPLE it was Luann who officially moved to dissolve the marriage.

“She is sad,” says the source, “but she was the one who made the decision to file.”

The source reveals that Luann is going on vacation and “finding comfort” with her grown children, Victoria and Noel.

Adds the source of Luann and Tom: “They had lots of issues and really tried to make it work, but it was just obvious they weren’t on the same page.”

Luann’s RHONY cast mate Ramona Singer, who had previously gone on dates with Tom and who made no secret of predicting the relationship would be short-lived, was among the first to respond to the news, replying to the original tweet: “I am so sad for you.”

The couple’s Dec. 31 wedding was the main event of a lavish, three-day wedding weekend in Palm Beach, Florida, attended by several friends of the bride from various Housewives franchises.

Luann, 52, was previously married to Count Alexandre de Lesseps. Tom, 50, had not previously been married.

Beset by doubts about their relationship throughout their whirlwind courtship, the pair weathered divorce rumors in mid-July, with a source telling PEOPLE the couple had hit a “major rough patch.”

“Tom and I are in love, and marriage takes work,” Luann told PEOPLE at the time. “We are working on this together.”

One insider told PEOPLE in July that many of the couple’s issues stemmed from “trust issues” related to lifelong bachelor Tom’s previous infidelity and flirtatious personality that had been causing friction well before the wedding.

“There have been a lot of problems,” acknowledged the source. “She felt he was using her for her fame and he went from Ramona to Sonja to her. He’s a Housewife groupie.”

Luann herself told PEOPLE just days after word of newlywed troubles surfaced: “What couple doesn’t argue? Tom and I have a very passionate love affair going and that’s why we got married.”

The Real Housewives of New York City airs Wednesdays (9 p.m. ET) on Bravo.
