Yes, Ella Yelich-O'Connor really is just 17 years old

While Lorde was busy collecting Grammy Awards on Sunday, some commenters on Twitter were speculating that the teen prodigy was actually an age impostor.

Though some of the so-called Lorde truther movement is in jest, website The Hairpin decided to quash those rumors for the low price of $17.02.

The site ordered a copy of Lorde’s birth certificate from New Zealand to prove to the world that Lorde (a.k.a. Ella Maria Lani Yelich-O’Connor) is, in fact, a 17-year-old. The site posted a picture of Lorde’s birth certificate, complete with full name and photographic evidence that her date of birth is Nov. 7, 1996, which makes her both a teenager and a Scorpio.

Still, not everyone is necessarily buying it:

While the above Tweet was clearly sent with tongue firmly in cheek, Yelich-O’Connor is aware of the rumors and, like someone far older than 17, she’s taking it all in stride. “Hi, I’m Ella, and I’m actually 45,” she deadpanned to Vanity Fair recently.

In fact, Lorde even took out a full-page ad Wednesday in the New Zealand Herald to thank her fans for their support. The artist won two Grammys at the 2014 award show, including song of the year for “Royals.” That’s more Grammys than Britney Spears, The Who or Diana Ross. Not bad work for a (confirmed!) teenager.
